Report on the May 3, 2014 State of Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program

We are pleased to report that the Spring 2014 Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Day held on May 3, 2014, at Moraine Valley Community College (MVCC) in Palos Hills, was a success with 933 vehicles participating, representing 1,147 households. This event was the result of cooperation among the District, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), and Moraine Valley Community College. Collaboration among Maintenance and Operations, Public Affairs, and Police staff was instrumental in the success of this event.
The event was held to give residents an opportunity to properly and legally dispose of hazardous household products in an environmentally safe manner. The collection day was funded by the IEPA and held at MVCC. The IEPA provided the disposal firm, Heritage Environmental, to collect and legally dispose of all waste collected. Over 230 55-gallon drums of waste were collected for safe disposal. In addition, the District and MVCC cooperated to provide battery, electronic, and textile collection.
Citizen feedback from this event was positive, with many residents expressing an interest in future events.
