RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF FEBRUARY 4, 2016

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing Prairie Junior High School for placing third in the Illinois Future City Competition
Body
WHEREAS, the 2016 Future City Team from Prairie Junior High School in Alsip, Illinois placed third in the Illinois Future City Competition and received four special awards including Best Design for a Sustainable City; and
WHEREAS, team members Fahed Altermathy, Ryan Cook, Ethan Escorcia, Erol Ikiz, Canon Maranda, Taha Naveed, Troy Ohlrich, and Adam Shaibat were mentored by Carol Baskas and Jeff Brubaker; and
WHEREAS, Ryan Cook, Erol Ikiz, and Canon Maranda presented at the regional competition; and
WHEREAS, the team designed a virtual city using SimCity software and showed their city’s progress in a slideshow; and
WHEREAS, this simulated design experience taught students city planning and helped them see the consequences of their decisions; and
WHEREAS, the team wrote a 1,500-word essay describing the unique attributes of their city and provided a solution to this year’s waste management challenge, the theme of which was “Waste Not, Want Not”; and
WHEREAS, after building a model of a section of their city using recyclable materials and four moving parts, the team gave a 7-minute presentation discussing features of their future city and their solution to the citywide challenge; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and staff, do hereby recognize the Prairie Junior High School team for their third-place finish in the Illinois Future City Competition; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and that a copy of same, suitably engrossed, be presented to the Prairie Junior High School Future City Team.
