RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF FEBRUARY 4, 2016

 

Title

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing Immaculate Conception School for their fifth-place finish in the Chicago Regional Future City Competition

Body

 

WHEREAS, the Future City Competition challenges sixth, seventh and eighth graders to design a city 150 years in the future, with the goal of encouraging students to consider future careers in engineering and science; and

 

WHEREAS, the theme for the 2016 Future City Competition was “Waste Not Want Not” with a focus on how to manage waste, especially through reuse and recycling; and

 

WHEREAS, Immaculate Conception School team members included Kirsten Grib, Nathan Houlihan,  Rachel Jalloway, Caroline Kinsella, Michael Giamarusti, Dan Collins, Frankie Valadez, Ryan Hadju, Marco Tirado, Tim Carroll, Liam Carroll, Sean Carroll, Nick Curio, Kevin Jaksic, Andrew Emerson, and Jack Igoe, who were supported by educator Roseanne Hendricks and engineer mentor Michael Tom; and

 

WHEREAS, the team was required to apply math, science, writing, research, public speaking, and problem solving skills to address real world engineering challenges; and

 

WHEREAS, the team was required to design and build a scale model of their city, present the city plan and concept, and research the available technology on hand; and

 

WHEREAS, at the Chicago Regional Future City Competition on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at the University of Illinois Chicago, the Immaculate Conception School team placed fifth, and won additional special awards for Most Futuristic City and Best City Description; and

 

WHEREAS, after building a model of a section of their city using recyclable materials and four moving parts, the team gave a 7-minute presentation discussing features of their future city and their solution to the citywide challenge; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and staff, recognize that these students represent the future of the scientific community and we applaud their ingenuity and encourage them to pursue careers in engineering and science; and do hereby recognize the Immaculate Conception School team for their fifth-place finish in the Chicago Regional Future City Competition; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and that a copy of same, suitably engrossed, be presented to the Immaculate Conception School Future City Team.
