RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF AUGUST 4, 2016

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing New Trier High School Rowing
Body
WHEREAS, rowing is one of the oldest sports in the world, dating back to the time of Athens and ancient Egypt; and
WHEREAS, rowing has been an Olympic sport since the founding of the modern Olympic games in 1896; and
WHEREAS, rowing has an extensive history in the United States, as the first intercollegiate sport, the first amateur sport to have a national organization, and the first sport to have its own national governing body; and
WHEREAS, rowing is not only a physically demanding sport, but also requires a high level of teamwork, discipline and coordination; and
WHEREAS, New Trier High School Rowing trains on the North Shore Channel, and is based at the Dammrich Rowing Center of the Skokie Park District; and
WHEREAS, New Trier High School Rowing was founded under the direction of Head Coach and Program Director Rose Marchuk in 2002 with 30 students; and
WHEREAS, New Trier High School Rowing has grown to include over 130 young men and women rowing on Varsity, Junior Varsity, Lightweight and Novice crews; and
WHEREAS, New Trier High School Rowing won its first Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association (MSRA) championship in 2004, when the Men’s Lightweight Varsity 8+ placed first at the MSRA championship regatta in Detroit, Michigan; and
WHEREAS, since 2004, New Trier High School Rowing has won 71 first-place medals at the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championships; and
WHEREAS, the New Trier High School Rowing Boys Varsity 8+ achieved an 18th-place finish, and the Girls Varsity 8+ achieved an 8th place finish, over the 3-mile distance at the 2015 Head of the Charles Regatta, which was held in Boston, Massachusetts in October 2015, rowing in a field of 85 youth national and even international entries in their category; and
WHEREAS, New Trier High School Rowing dominated the 1,500 meter course at the 2016 Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association finals at Dillon Lake held in Nashport, Ohio on May 9th and 10th, winning first-place trophies in Men’s Varsity 8+, Women’s Varsity 8+, Men’s Second Varsity 8+, Women’s Second Varsity 8+, Women’s Third Varsity 8+, Men’s Lightweight Varsity 8+, Women’s Lightweight Varsity 8+; Women’s Freshmen 8+, Women’s Novice 8+, and Women’s Lightweight Novice 8+; and
WHEREAS, New Trier High School Rowing qualified for the 2016 Scholastic Rowing Association of America finals on May 27th and May 28th, also in Nashport, Ohio, and dominated the premier varsity events, winning all four first-place trophies (Men’s Varsity 8+, Women’s Varsity 8+, Men’s Second Varsity 8+ and Women’s Second Varsity 8+); and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is committed to the improving the water quality in the Chicago River and its associated waterways, and supports the sport and recreational use of the Chicago River, of which New Trier High School Rowing is a shining example;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and staff, do hereby congratulate New Trier High School Rowing for their achievements; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
