WHEREAS, Greek is currently spoken by nearly 13.2 million people in Greece, Cyprus and the Diaspora around the world; and

WHEREAS, following years of pressure by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, plus Diaspora schools and organizations, including the Hellenic American Leadership Council and the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad, February 9th has been designated as International Greek Language Day; and

WHEREAS, the day will provide many opportunities to celebrate and share Greek language and culture; and

WHEREAS, as part of the celebration, families are encouraged to speak more Greek at home, introduce people to Greek culture, traditions and celebrations, play Greek music and cook Greek food; and

WHEREAS, the Commissioners are honored to have representatives from the Dr. Basil E. Stephens Greek School, Aristotle Greek Schools, Solon Greek School and Koraes Elementary School accepting this resolution in honor of International Greek Language Day; and
