RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF JANUARY 21, 2010

MEMORIAL RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners extending sympathy and condolences to the family of Wesley W. South

Body

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Wesley W. South passed from this life on January 9, 2010; and

 

WHEREAS, Wesley W. South married the late Mildred South; and

 

WHEREAS, Wesley is credited as one of the pioneers of Black Talk Radio; and

 

WHEREAS, Wesley W. South was one of the first African Americans to graduate from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University; and

 

 WHEREAS, Wesley worked as a journalist for the Chicago Defender, the Chicago American, the Chicago Daily News and Johnson Publishing Company; and

 

WHEREAS, Wesley W. South’s radio career began in 1963 as a host on WVON’s Public Affairs Talk Show, Hotline, which provided a platform for popular newsmakers, such as Robert Kennedy, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Jackie Robinson, Malcolm X, Medgar Evers and others; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1975, Wesley W. South and a colleague formed Midway Broadcasting Corporation and acquired WVON Radio; and

 

WHEREAS, Wesley had a great interest in public service and served in various capacities in the NAACP, the Chicago Urban League and Operation Breadbasket; and

 

WHEREAS, Wesley W. South is survived by his daughter, (Retired) Appellate Court Justice Leslie South, son-in law Arthur Jackson, and grandson Wesley Jackson; and

 

WHEREAS, countless people mourn the passing of this extraordinary man.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, extend our sympathy and condolences to the family of Wesley W. South; and

 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, and that a copy of same, suitably engrossed, be presented to the family of Wesley W. South.
