RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF APRIL 1, 2010

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners congratulating Joseph P. Sobanski on his 34 years of service and retirement
Body
WHEREAS, Joseph P. (“Joe”) Sobanski, Director of Engineering, retired from the classified service of the District on February 28, 2010, after 34 years of service; and
WHEREAS, Joe received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 1973; and
WHEREAS, Joseph P. Sobanski is a Licensed Professional Engineer in Illinois; and
WHEREAS, During his career at the District Joe served in positions of increasing responsibility, including Civil Engineer, Supervising Civil Engineer and Assistant Chief Engineer from 1975 to 2004; and
WHEREAS, Joe was appointed as the District’s Chief Engineer, now known as Director of Engineering, in 2004; and
WHEREAS, Joe, as Director of Engineering, was responsible for the work of the Process Facilities, Infrastructure Management and Construction Divisions of the Engineering Department, employing 281 professional and para-professional personnel; and
WHEREAS, Joseph P. Sobanski’s initiative, expertise, dedication and leadership have contributed to the construction and implementation of the District’s award-winning Tunnel and Reservation Plan (TARP); and
WHEREAS, Joe has served his professional community in a variety of ways, including a three-year role as President of the City Branch of the Chicago Metro Chapter of the American Public Works Association and current service to the National Association of Flood and Stormwater Management Agencies as a Board Member at Large; and
WHEREAS, Joseph P. Sobanski’s professional peers have commended him on his activities directed toward developing and implementing the District’s comprehensive county-wide stormwater management plan; and
WHEREAS, Joe has been nominated by the American Public Works Association, Chicago Metropolitan Chapter - City Branch, for the American Public Works Association Top Ten Public Works Leaders of the Year 2009 Award; and
WHEREAS, Joseph P. Sobanski dedicated his professional career to the fulfillment of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago’s motto “Protecting Our Water Environment”; and
WHEREAS, Notwithstanding his dedication to the District, Joe is a dedicated family man to his wife, Susan, of 33 years, and their three adult children; Paul, Nancy and Tom.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and
our staff, do hereby congratulate Joseph P. Sobanski upon the celebration of his thirty-
four years of service to and retirement from District employment, and express our gratitude and appreciation for his work on behalf of the community and the environment; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, and that a copy of same, suitably engrossed, be presented to Joseph P. Sobanski.
