RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF AUGUST 14, 2008

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing the 18th Anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine
Body
 
WHEREAS on August 24, 1991, Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union and on the First of December of this same year, over 90% of its citizens confirmed their desire to live in a sovereign state through a national referendum; and
 
WHEREAS, since regaining independence, Ukraine has declared its course toward democratization and the establishment of a market economy, as well as a re-integration into the international community of free and democratic states.
 
WHEREAS during the past 16 years, Ukraine continues to advance along the path toward a stable democracy founded on market economic principles and has achieved tremendous success in this respect, which as been noted by the United States, as well as the international community, who have both passed numerous legislative acts to improve political and economic relations with Ukraine; and
 
WHEREAS the people of Ukraine have demonstrated an extremely high democratic culture and reaffirmed their desire to live in a democratic state during the Orange Revolution of 2004 by reclaiming their right to free and fair elections; and
 
WHEREAS the Ukrainian citizenry confirmed it unwavering will to integrate into the Euro-Atlantic community and its various institutions by electing a leadership that continues to lead Ukraine towards that goal; and
 
WHEREAS Ukraine continues to act as a guarantor of regional stability by actively and successfully assisting in conflict resolution between neighboring states, as well as maintaining friendly relations with all of its neighbors.
 
WHEREAS Ukraine has proven-beyond a doubt-its commitment to international peace and security by declaring its goal of NATO membership, acting as a reliable and long-term ally in the war against terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq, and cooperating in international programs aimed at improved security throughout the world.
 
WHEREAS the resolution of the political crisis in Ukraine by means of political dialogue, and without the use of force, demonstrates the high level of democratic culture that has already been established among Ukraine's leadership, as well as on the grass-roots level.
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we urge all citizens to join the celebrations commemorating this momentous event in the life of the Ukrainian Nation.  Let us recommit ourselves to helping the Ukrainian Nation reclaim its rightful place in the international democratic community and remember the heroes who sacrificed their lives to ensure the freedom and happiness of future generations; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and that a copy of same, suitably engrossed, be presented to the President of the Ukraine Congress Committee, Paul Bandrivski.
