RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF NOVEMBER 5, 2020

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing the 50th anniversary of Alliance for the Great Lakes

Body

 

WHEREAS, the Great Lakes consists of 94,250 square miles of freshwater and is one of the largest freshwater systems in the world.  Composed of five separate lakes, touching eight states and two Canadian provinces, the Great Lakes supports one of the most successful economies worldwide, consisting in part of tourism, agriculture, fishing, and manufacturing; and

 

WHEREAS, in recent years, the Great Lakes has experienced an above average temperature increase, which drives home the significance of the impact of climate change on our most valuable natural resources; and

 

WHEREAS, Lake Michigan, one of the most popular of the Great Lakes, is the only one of the Great Lakes that is contained entirely within the boundaries of the United States.  Approximately twelve million people in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan call the shores of Lake Michigan home; and

 

WHEREAS, the mission of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is to protect Lake Michigan as the drinking water source for the people of the Greater Chicago metropolitan region and maintain it as a safe place for healthy recreation; and

 

WHEREAS, Alliance for the Great Lakes is a nonprofit organization created to protect and preserve the integrity of the Great Lakes.  Through the contributions of sponsors, the organization is able to advocate on a wide variety of issues regarding the usage and conservation of the Great Lakes; and

 

WHEREAS, Alliance for the Great Lakes established the Adopt-a-Beach program, was instrumental in creation of the Great Lakes Legacy Act and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, and worked to advance the Great Lakes Compact; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and staff, do hereby recognize the 50th anniversary of Alliance for the Great Lakes; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and that a copy of same, suitably engrossed, be presented to Alliance for the Great Lakes.
