RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 15, 2022

MEMORIAL RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners celebrating the life of Satsuki (May) Nakano

Body

 

WHEREAS, born Satsuki Kawamoto on May 31,1943 to Masao and Hisako at the East Lillooet Japanese-Canadian World War II Internment Camp in British Columbia, Canada, Mrs. Nakano was known for her candid honesty, her kindness, and her humor; and

 

WHEREAS, originally called Sally by a schoolteacher, her name was changed to May, in honor of her birth month, to make it easier to pronounce; and

 

WHEREAS, after being released from the internment camp, Mrs. Nakano and her family lived on a farm in Langley, British Columbia. Mrs. Nakano always dreamed of leaving the farm and earning a better life for herself; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1967, Mrs. Nakano immigrated to Chicago, Illinois where she was hired by Merrill Lynch (now known as Merrill) as a broker’s assistant and legal secretary; and

 

WHEREAS, after leaving her position at Merrill Lynch, Mrs. Nakano became employed at Heiwa Terrace, a building funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Uptown neighborhood that focused on providing affordable housing for the Japanese American community.  Mrs. Nakano was hired as an assistant manager, a position that she proudly held for fifteen years; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Nakano also served as a secretary at the Midwest Buddhist Temple.  Additionally, she served on the boards of the Japanese American Citizens League and the Japanese American Service Committee; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Nakano’s memory will be punctuated with stories about her exquisite Japanese cuisine, her willingness to help others, and her lively personality.  Her memory will be honored by her children Megan and Matt; her brother Ted; her nephew Jon-Erik; her grandnephew Ben; and a plethora of other loving relatives and friends; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby extend our condolences to the family of Satsuki (May) Nakano; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and that a copy of same, suitably engrossed, be presented to the family of Satsuki (May) Nakano.
