RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing October as Polish American Heritage Month
Body
WHEREAS, Polish immigration to the United States can be traced back to the early 1600’s, when Polish craftsmen began arriving in Jamestown, Virginia. These craftsmen, who were recruited by the American colonists, were essential laborers in the woodworking and glass blowing industries; and
WHEREAS, the contributions of Americans of Polish descent are immeasurable. Polish Americans have influenced all facets of American society including the arts, education, science, religion, and government; and
WHEREAS, Polish American Heritage Month celebrations began in 1981 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Over the succeeding three years, the commemoration of Polish American Heritage Month gained popularity and subsequently expanded beyond the East Coast; and
WHEREAS, as a result of the growing admiration of the Polish American community, on August 7, 1984, the 98th Congress of the United States issued Public Law 98-374. This Joint Resolution designated August 1984 as Polish American Heritage Month; and
WHEREAS, in 1986, the commemoration of Polish American Heritage Month was moved to October. On October 13, 1986, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5548 which expressed gratitude and acknowledged the contributions of the Polish American community, and proclaimed October 1986 as Polish American Heritage Month; and
WHEREAS, it is estimated that there are approximately 10 million Polish Americans living in the United States. While the largest Polish population resides in New York, Chicago has the highest percentage of Polish Americans; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is proud to join in the acknowledgement of October as Polish American Heritage Month; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby recognize October as Polish American Heritage Month; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
