RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 5, 2024

Title

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing September 16th as Mexican Independence Day

Body

WHEREAS, on September 16th, Mexico will celebrate the anniversary of its declaration of independence from Spain.  Passionately called “El Grito”, Mexican Independence Day is an annual commemoration of Mexican heritage and pride; and

WHEREAS, on September 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (now known as the Father of Mexican Independence), a local priest and leader from the town of Dolores urged parishioners to join him in the fight for justice and racial equality.  The speech, known as “EI Grito de Dolores” or “the Cry of Dolores”, marked the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence; and

WHEREAS, on August 24, 1821, after more than a decade of unrest, the War of Independence ended with the signing of the Treaty of Cordoba in Veracruz, Mexico.  Intrinsically, Mexico was officially recognized as an independent constitutional monarchy.  Thereafter, Mexico proudly elected its first president in 1824; and

WHEREAS, on September 15, 2024, the Little Village Chamber of Commerce will sponsor its annual Mexican Independence Day Parade.  The theme of the 2024 parade is “Celebrando Nuestras Tradiciones” or “Celebrating Our Traditions”.  The parade will focus on the traditional cultural celebrations of Mexico including folkloric dancing and the artistry of charrería; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is humbled by Mexico’s fight for freedom and is honored to recognize Mexican Independence Day; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby recognize September 16th as Mexican Independence Day; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
