RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF JULY 13, 2023

Title

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners supporting the efforts of communities in Cook County to make financial disaster assistance available to their residents

Body

WHEREAS, on July 2, 2023, a slow-moving low-pressure system combined with abnormally high atmospheric moisture caused multiple prolonged cycles of torrential rainfall and flash flooding in Northern Illinois.  As a result, numerous municipalities located in Cook County experienced a record-breaking rainstorm, with the rainfall totaling over nine inches in some locations; and

WHEREAS, due to the sizeable amount of rain that rapidly descended, many communities experienced flooding and many Cook County residents suffered damage to their homes, cars, and other property; and

WHEREAS, in the wake of the storm, several municipalities including the Town of Cicero and the City of Berwyn have taken steps to have a disaster declared for the affected areas and enable their residents to avail themselves of much needed financial assistance; and

WHEREAS, elected officials on the City of Chicago’s South and West Sides have taken similar steps; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago supports the efforts of these communities and all other similarly affected communities, and pledges to work closely with them in their efforts; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby support the efforts of communities in the MWRD service area that were disproportionately impacted by the July 2nd rainstorm to receive a major disaster declaration and have financial disaster assistance available to anyone who suffered property loss as a result of this devastating storm; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
