RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF JUNE 16, 2016

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing the Midwest Pesticide Action Center and their Midwest Grows Green initiative
Body
WHEREAS, the Midwest Pesticide Action Center has promoted and advanced safer alternatives to potentially harmful pesticides for 22 years; and
WHEREAS, the home and garden sector applies more than 90 million pounds of herbicide product on lawns and gardens each year; and
WHEREAS, the most frequently found herbicide in urban streams and shallow groundwater is 2, 4-D, the active ingredient in weed and feed and other lawn products; and
WHEREAS, research has linked 2, 4-D and glyphosate to various nervous, behavioral, endocrine, immune, and reproductive system disorders; and
WHEREAS, the Midwest Pesticide Action Center works to prevent the use and spread of these harmful chemicals at the point of introduction through natural lawn care education and outreach; and
WHEREAS, the Midwest Pesticide Action Center’s Midwest Grows Green (MGG) initiative groups natural lawn care work under one distinctive, orange MGG stamp to signify efforts to protect people, pets and the environment by practicing natural lawn care; and
WHEREAS, Midwest Grows Green has furthered natural lawn care in the Greater Chicago Area by recruiting pesticide-free parks, asking retailers to eco-label their lawn care products, and obtaining pledges from individuals to reduce their own synthetic pesticide and fertilizer use; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and staff, do hereby recognize the Midwest Pesticide Action Center and their Midwest Grows Green initiative; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and that a copy of same, suitably engrossed, be presented to Ruth Kerzee, Executive Director of the Midwest Pesticide Action Center.
