MEMORIAL RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners extending sympathy and condolences to the family of Barbara Jones Green
Body
WHEREAS, Barbara Jones Green was called to eternal rest on February 22, 2008; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Jones Green was raised in Monroe, Louisiana and matriculated at Tennessee State University where she received a degree in Business Administration; and
WHEREAS, she continued her education at Spertus College in Chicago, Illinois and in 1999 was awarded a Master’s Degree in Human Service Administration; and
WHEREAS, as a long-time resident of the Lake Meadows neighborhood in Chicago she made the youth of the neighborhood her priority; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Jones Green started the Lakeside Community Committee in Washington Park over 30 years ago to help teenagers at risk for delinquency; and
WHEREAS, over the years, the Lakeside Community Committee evolved and expanded to provide HIV and substance abuse prevention programs, transitional programs for pregnant teens and young mothers, tutoring and recruitment of foster parents; and
WHEREAS, the Lakeside Community Committee has grown to include five locations and a staff over 80 employees and provides services for hundreds of people each year; and
WHEREAS, the Direct Action/Visitation Program, which allows biological families and siblings in crisis to spend much needed time together at Lakeside Community Committee, would not have been possible without Ms. Jones Green; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Jones Green served as a member of the very distinguished Advisory Board of the Common Ground Foundation with, among others, Harry Belafonte, John Legend, Tavis Smiley, Chris Webber and Serena Williams to further the empowerment and development of urban youth in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Jones Green was a successful business woman in addition to being a community activist, having provided concessions to Midway Airport and the Cook County Criminal Court’s Administration Building through her business, Jonette Productions ; and
WHEREAS, countless people, including her sisters, Betty Robertson and Gertha Estill, mourn the passing of this wonderful humanitarian, activist and businesswoman who lived a full life and made it her mission to better the lives of the youth in her community; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and staff, extend our sympathy and condolences to the family of Barbara Jones Green; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and that a copy of same, suitably engrossed, be presented to the family of Barbara Jones Green.
