RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing Chicago River Day

Body

 

WHEREAS, the Chicago River is one of the most valuable and prominent natural resources in the City of Chicago. The Chicago River begins in Chicago’s northern suburbs and travels south through the heart of the City; and

 

WHEREAS, established in 1979, Friends of the Chicago River is a non-profit organization whose mission is to advocate for environmental improvements that positively impact the Chicago River for the benefit of people, plants, and animals; and

 

WHEREAS, Friends of the Chicago River is focused on enhancing the Chicago River system in an effort to ensure that it continues to be a beautiful corridor of open space; and

 

WHEREAS, to build momentum for the various projects that it sponsors, Friends of the Chicago River partners with numerous organizations, including local government agencies, businesses, and other community groups; and

 

WHEREAS, one of the most well recognized, and largest projects is Chicago River Day.  Started in 1992, Chicago River Day is dedicated to cleaning trash and debris around the Chicago River to prevent it from entering the river system and causing harm to wildlife and the ecosystem; and

 

WHEREAS, this year Chicago River Day will take place on May 13th with volunteers working in over 70 locations from Lake County to Calumet to clean up parks, forest preserves, and neighborhoods; and

 

WHEREAS, Friends of the Chicago River features a river animal each year to connect us to the animals who rely on the Chicago River system and the blue spotted salamander has been selected as the 2023 Chicago River animal; and

 

WHEREAS, Chicago River Day is important in the effort to maintain the Chicago River as a safe and healthy ecosystem; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby recognize Chicago River Day; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and that a copy of same, suitably engrossed, be presented to Friends of the Chicago River.
