TRANSMITTAL LETTER FOR BOARD MEETING OF APRIL 7, 2016

COMMITTEE ON JUDICIARY

Mr. David St. Pierre, Executive Director

Title

Authority to settle the Workers’ Compensation Claim of William Balmer vs. MWRDGC, Case 14 WC 17849, Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission (IWCC), in the sum of $38,789.23, Account 901-30000-601090

Body

Dear Sir:

William Balmer is an Engineering Technician V at the Calumet Water Reclamation Plant.  On March 4, 2014, he sustained an injury to his right knee when he slipped and fell on ice. Mr. Balmer was initially seen at the Industrial clinic on March 4, 2014. On May 27, 2014, he underwent a procedure.  Following that procedure, he underwent a period of physical therapy.  Mr. Balmer returned to light duty work on July 8, 2014.  He was able to resume his regular work hours and regular duties effective September 22, 2014.

Mr. Balmer was paid a total of $7,160.96, which represents 6 weeks of lost time benefits.

Mr. Balmer’s attorney filed an Application of Adjustment of Claim with the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission (IWCC).  Subject to the approval of the IWCC, this case can now be settled for $38,789.23, representing approximately 25% loss of a right leg. This settlement will close out future lost time benefits, as well as any future medical benefits associated with this injury.

The Director of Human Resources believes this settlement is in the best interest of the District and requests payment of that sum be approved and she be authorized to execute such documents as may be necessary to effect the settlement.

Requested, Denice E. Korcal, Director of Human Resources, DEK:RAJ:RG:sts

Respectfully Submitted, Mariyana T. Spyropoulos, Chairman Committee on Judiciary
