MEMORIAL RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners celebrating the life of Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr. (As Revised)

WHEREAS, Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson passed away February 17, 2026, at age 84. He was a towering figure in American history who dedicated his life to the pursuit of civil rights, social justice, and equality for all people; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Jackson was a protégé of Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement, he helped to dismantle the barriers of segregation and inspired generations to continue the struggle for justice; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1971 Reverend Jackson founded the Rainbow PUSH Coalition in Chicago, through which he tirelessly advocated for economic empowerment, voting rights, educational opportunity, and international human rights; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Jackson was a proud Chicagoan whose voice and vision uplifted communities across the city and whose work resonated deeply with the mission of public institutions like the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago to serve all residents equitably; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Jackson championed environmental justice, recognizing that clean air, safe water, and a healthy environment are fundamental human rights; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Jackson consistently called attention to the disproportionate impact of pollution and climate change on marginalized communities, urging leaders to understand that environmental stewardship is inseparable from the fight for social justice; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Jackson’s legacy is not only national but global, as he championed peace, dialogue, and dignity across borders, leaving an indelible mark on humanity; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Jackson was married to Jacqueline Jackson and was the father of six children, Santita, Jesse Jr., Jonathan, Yusef, Jacqueline and Ashley; and

 

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago recognizes the profound loss felt by his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless individuals whose lives were touched by his courage and compassion; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago hereby honors the life and legacy of Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr., and extends its deepest condolences to his family and to all who mourn his passing; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent records of the District, and that a copy be presented to the family of Reverend Jackson as a testament to his enduring impact on Chicago, the nation, and the world.
