RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 15, 2016

Title

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing the “Imagine a Day Without Water” campaign

Body

WHEREAS, organized by the Value of Water Coalition, the “Imagine a Day Without Water” campaign highlights the critical importance of reliable access to clean water in our lives; and

WHEREAS, on September 15, 2016, hundreds of organizations across the country will partake in events aimed at raising awareness about the crucial need for investment in infrastructure to ensure that no community in America is left without water; and

WHEREAS, the crisis in Flint, Michigan shows the severe impacts to the health and well-being of a community without access to clean drinking water; and

WHEREAS, changes in weather patterns are causing epic drought and widespread flooding in regions throughout the United States, putting pressure on water systems that are ill-equipped to manage such extreme events; and

WHEREAS, one-fifth of the U.S. economy would grind to a halt without a reliable and clean source of water; and

WHEREAS, investment in infrastructure projects creates jobs, helps prevent flooding costs, allows households and businesses to run more efficiently and can help mitigate the negative impact of climate change; and

WHEREAS, managing water responsibly is critical to our nation’s environmental health and to a high quality of life through economic commerce, power generation, and recreation; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is to protect the quality of the water supply source, improve the quality of water in watercourses in its service area, protect businesses and homes from flood damages, and manage water as a vital resource; and

WHEREAS, in adding disinfection facilities at two of its treatment plants, seeking to implement nutrient recovery systems and achieve energy neutrality at all of its facilities, and through continued investment in innovative infrastructure and technologies, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District proves its commitment to this mission; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and staff, hereby recognize the “Imagine a Day Without Water” campaign and the importance of educating the public about the value of water, and encourage our fellow citizens to take note of, and participate in, the special activities arranged in observance of this event; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
