Title

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing Veterans Day and honoring Team Rubicon North Branch

Body

WHEREAS, Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is an annual celebration honoring the multitude of veterans that have served with pride, honor, and distinction in the six branches of the United States military and that have defended the United States Constitution; and

WHEREAS, on November 11, 1919, in commemoration of the end of World War I, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the day as Armistice Day in honor of the soldiers that had served and perished in the war.  November 11th was chosen as it was widely accepted that the unofficial end to war occurred on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918; and

WHEREAS, on June 4, 1926, the House of Representatives passed a concurrent resolution requesting that President Calvin Coolidge issue a proclamation recognizing Armistice Day. President Coolidge issued the requested proclamation on November 3,1926.  On May 13, 1938, a Congressional resolution was issued proclaiming Armistice Day a legal holiday; and

WHEREAS, while Armistice Day had its roots in World War I, following the conclusion of World War II, the decision was made to expand the day of recognition to include all military veterans.  On June 1, 1954, Congress passed Public Law 380, amending its 1938 resolution, striking the word “Armistice” and replacing it with the word “Veterans”; and

WHEREAS, Veterans Day is an opportunity to honor all of the men and women that have exhibited unparalleled bravery and have sacrificed unselfishly to ensure that the freedom that Americans enjoy on a daily basis is unconditionally protected; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is proud to employ distinguished men and women of the United States military and honor their service, sacrifice, and contributions; and

WHEREAS, founded in 2010, Team Rubicon is a veteran led non-profit organization that provides humanitarian, disaster, and crises relief throughout the United States and abroad.  Utilizing the training and skills that they were taught as members of the armed forces, Team Rubicon volunteers work tirelessly, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to service the needs of others; and

WHEREAS, Team Rubicon North Branch serves the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regions 1, 2, 3, 5 (Illinois), and 7.  These proud men and women assist in innumerable ways, always willing to sacrifice for the betterment of humankind; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby recognize Veterans Day and honor Team Rubicon North Branch; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and that a copy of same, suitably engrossed, be presented to Team Rubicon North Branch.
