RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing September 2nd as Labor Day
Body
WHEREAS, recognized on the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an American tradition that pays tribute to the contributions and accomplishments of the working class; and
WHEREAS, it is believed that the first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York. Thereafter, the tradition slowly spread to other states; and
WHEREAS, by 1894, twenty-four states had adopted the annual celebration and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day; and
WHEREAS, while there is some debate as to whom the original creator of Labor Day was, the Industrial Revolution is credited with creating an environment in which American workers are saluted; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (District) extends its gratitude to all of our employees that help the agency to achieve its mission on a daily basis; and
WHEREAS, the District recognizes the American working class and extends its gratitude to all the women and men that contribute to the success of our great nation; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby recognize September 2nd as Labor Day; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
