RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF JULY 15, 2021
Title
RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners celebrating the 100th anniversary of Misericordia
Body
WHEREAS, Misericordia has transcended innumerable boundaries in its 100 years of operation. Originally founded as the Misericordia Maternity Hospital and Home for Infants, the facility opened its doors on February 4, 1921. Located at 2916 West 47th Street in Chicago, the hospital offered services to pregnant women with limited financial resources. The name was formally changed to Misericordia Home in 1951. In 1954, recognizing the absence of facilities to provide care for young children with developmental and physical disabilities, Misericordia decided to refocus its mission on serving this community; and
WHEREAS, in 1976, with the closing of the Angel Guardian Orphanage, Misericordia was able to relocate to its current location in the Rogers Park neighborhood. The 31-acre campus contains multiple housing compounds, which range from full care facilities to independent living residences, which serve the more than 600 adults and children with developmental and intellectual disabilities that call Misericordia home. In addition to the residential program, the Outreach Program also provides services to individuals from the adjacent community; and
WHEREAS, the recipients of care at Misericordia participate in various programs designed to assist them with living dynamic and gratifying lives, including programs created to provide employment opportunities; education; physical, occupational, and speech therapy; health and fitness acuity; emotional and behavioral support; and recreational activities; and
WHEREAS, Misericordia provides support for all that qualify for its assistance, regardless of age, race, religion, economic status, or background. Misericordia has an established record of creating a strong sense of community, which builds character and creates an excellent quality of life for all that are privileged to be a part of the Misericordia family. The dedicated employees of Misericordia are recognized for the exceptional standard of care that they provide; and
WHEREAS, Misericordia is a testament of success. From its humble beginnings to the vast complex care facility that it has become, Misericordia respects the fragility of life and demonstrates the powerful impact that an environment filled with love and compassion can have on an individual and a community; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby celebrate the 100th anniversary of Misericordia; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and that a copy of same, suitably engrossed, be presented to Misericordia.
