RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Cal-Sag Channel and the Calumet Water Reclamation Plant

WHEREAS, in 1922, the Calumet-Saganashkee Channel (Cal-Sag Channel), a man-made navigation canal, was created to reverse the flow of the Calumet River system and divert waste away from Lake Michigan to the Illinois River. This was done to protect Lake Michigan, which provides the drinking water for the metropolitan Chicago area. Approximately sixteen miles long, the Cal-Sag Channel was dug from the Little Calumet River to the Sanitary and Ship Canal; and
WHEREAS, shortly after the opening of the Cal-Sag Channel, the Calumet Water Reclamation Plant went online and became operational; and
WHEREAS, the Calumet Water Reclamation Plant (CWRP) is one of seven wastewater treatment facilities operated by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (District). In operation since 1922, the CWRP is the oldest of the District’s seven facilities. The CWRP services residents and businesses located in the southern portion of Cook County, serving approximately 1,000,000 people in an approximate 300 square miles radius; and
WHEREAS, numerous awards have been presented to the District in recognition of the accomplishments and performance of the CWRP. Included in this list is the National Association of Clean Water Agencies, which has given the CWRP its highest awards for compliance with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System standards; and
WHEREAS, in honor of this momentous occasion, there will be a special presentation regarding the history of the Cal-Sal Channel and the CWRP at the District’s 10th Annual Sustainability Summit; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Cal-Sag Channel and the Calumet Water Reclamation Plant; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
