RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing November as Puerto Rican Heritage Month
Body
WHEREAS, officially known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico is a collection of islands located in the Caribbean Sea; and
WHEREAS, surrendered to the United States by Spain on December 10, 1898, at the conclusion of the Spanish-American War, Puerto Ricans were granted citizenship on March 2, 1917 by means of the Jones-Shafroth Act; and
WHEREAS, thereafter on July 25, 1952, Puerto Rico became a Commonwealth of the United States; and
WHEREAS, in the late 1940s, many Puerto Ricans relocated to Chicago from New York. As of 2023, it is estimated that the Chicago metropolitan area is home to approximately 206,682 people of Puerto Rican heritage; and
WHEREAS, Puerto Rican Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions and unique identity of Puerto Ricans; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby recognize November as Puerto Rican Heritage Month; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
