RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF FEBRUARY 4, 2021

MEMORIAL RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners celebrating the life of Mrs. Irene Crayton-Unokiwe

Body

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Irene Crayton-Unokiwe was born on October 11, 1946 in Vicksburg, Mississippi to Roosevelt and Maelinda Crayton; and

 

WHEREAS, at the age of seven, Mrs. Crayton-Unokiwe migrated north with her family, from Vicksburg, Mississippi to Chicago, Illinois.  Mrs. Crayton-Unokiwe attended John Marshall High School, where she flourished.  Following graduation, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, after earning her degree, Mrs. Crayton-Unokiwe decided to pursue her dreams and begin the next chapter of her life in Cleveland, Ohio.  And pursue her dreams she did.  It was here, in Cleveland, that she met and married the love of her life, Oni Unokiwe. In 1980, the joyful couple relocated to Staten Island, New York; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Crayton-Unokiwe’s intelligence, kindness, and wisdom were widely acknowledged. While she was often recognized for her soft-spoken nature, she was also known for her love of a good laugh; and  

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Crayton-Unokiwe’s employment included being an Executive Assistant to esteemed lawyers wherever she resided.  After many years, she decided that a career change was in order.  Relying on her keen ability to nurture and encourage, she engaged in a career as a social worker.  For numerous years, Mrs. Crayton-Unokiwe worked at Community Resources for the Developmentally Disabled.  She later went on to work for the Catholic Guardian Society.  In 2010, after a productive, compassionate, and fulfilling career, Mrs. Crayton-Unokiwe retired; and   

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Irene Crayton-Unokiwe leaves to continue her incredible legacy her beloved husband of 42 years, Oni; her son Kanayo Chukwu; her two daughters Melinda and Victoria N’didi; her nephew/son Christian (whom she lovingly called Bugsy); her three brothers Willie (Katie) Tucker, A.C. Crayton, and Calvin Crayton; her two sisters Barbara McGowan and Denise Hudson-Davis; and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, Godchildren, cousins, brother & sister-in-law’s, and friends; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and staff, do hereby extend our condolences to the family of Mrs. Irene Crayton-Unokiwe; and 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and that a copy of same, suitably engrossed, be presented to the family of Mrs. Irene Crayton-Unokiwe.
