RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF JULY 13, 2023

Title

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing the 100th anniversary of Saint George Greek Orthodox Church

Body

WHEREAS, in 1923, local leaders of the Greek community purchased a church building and adjacent lots located along Sheffield Avenue in Lincoln Park.  On January 9, 1923, the church was officially renamed Saint George and began holding orthodox services in April of 1923. Great effort was expended to beautify the church, with traditional Byzantine style iconography; and

WHEREAS, since its founding, Saint George has offered numerous services to the Greek American community including classes where the Greek language, writing, history, and dance are taught; Greek Sunday school classes; outreach services to provide meals for individuals and families experiencing financial hardship; and activities to assist community members with social networking; and

WHEREAS, Saint George is hosting numerous events throughout the year in commemoration of this historic event.  One event, held on May 7th, was Saint George’s Gala Celebration.  Attended by numerous church and community members, the Gala was an exuberant celebration of the rich history of the church; and

WHEREAS, on October 15th, the Holy Consecration of Saint George Greek Orthodox Church will take place.  This sacred event will be the final tribute honoring Saint George’s humble beginnings and its immeasurable value; and

WHEREAS, 100 years after its founding, Saint George Greek Orthodox Church continues to promote the Orthodox faith, stewardship, philanthropy, and the Greek language and is a cherished establishment in the Lincoln Park neighborhood and the Greek American community; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby recognize the 100th anniversary of Saint George Greek Orthodox Church; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
