Title

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing October as Polish American Heritage Month

Body

WHEREAS, Polish immigration to the United States can be traced back to the early 1600’s, when Polish craftsmen began arriving in Jamestown, Virginia.  These craftsmen, who were recruited by the American colonists, were essential laborers in the woodworking and glass blowing industries; and

WHEREAS, the contributions of Americans of Polish descent are immeasurable.  Polish Americans have influenced all facets of American society including the arts, education, science, religion, and government; and

WHEREAS, Polish American Heritage Month celebrations began in 1981 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Over the succeeding three years, the commemoration of Polish American Heritage Month gained popularity and subsequently expanded beyond the East Coast; and

WHEREAS, as a result of the growing admiration of the Polish American community, on August 7, 1984, the 98th Congress of the United States issued Public Law 98-374.  This Joint Resolution designated August 1984 as Polish American Heritage Month; and

WHEREAS, in 1986, the commemoration of Polish American Heritage Month was moved to October.  On October 13, 1986, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5548 which expressed gratitude and acknowledged the contributions of the Polish American community, and proclaimed October 1986 as Polish American Heritage Month; and

WHEREAS, it is estimated that there are approximately 10 million Polish Americans living in the United States.  While the largest Polish population resides in New York, Chicago has the highest percentage of Polish Americans; and
