RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing Italian-American Heritage and Culture Month and honoring the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans

WHEREAS, Italian migration to the United States is traced back to the 1820’s. During the early 1900’s immigration rates increased dramatically. Today, Italian Americans constitute the fifth largest ancestry group in the United States; and
WHEREAS, October 12, 1989, President George H.W. Bush issued the first Presidential Proclamation (Proclamation 6045) recognizing October as Italian-American Heritage and Culture Month and on October 25, 1989, the 101st Congress of United States issued Public Law 101-128 designating the same; and
WHEREAS, founded in 1952, the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans (JCCIA) serves as an umbrella organization for the Italian American organizations in the Chicagoland area. The JCCIA focuses on fostering Italian heritage and assisting the Italian American community; and
WHEREAS, the JCCIA hosts numerous events and festivities throughout the year including scholarship contests to benefit Italian American youth, fundraisers to support national causes, and local events celebrating Italian history such as the annual Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Humanitarian of the Year Award; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby recognize Italian-American Heritage and Culture Month and honor the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
