RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing the 40th anniversary of Chicago Gaelic Park

Body

 

WHEREAS, Chicago Gaelic Park began in 1983 when a group of Irish lads joined together to purchase land with the dream of being able to play their native sports. Volunteer laborers worked together to set the foundation of Chicago Gaelic Park. Irish tradespeople donated virtually all of the labor used to build Chicago Gaelic Park. Two years later, Chicago Gaelic Park officially opened; and

 

WHEREAS, four decades later, Chicago Gaelic Park is the largest Irish cultural center in North America. Today it spreads across 53 acres, featuring seven full-sized sports fields, banquet halls and meeting rooms, and The Carraig, a traditional Irish pub. The facility is also home to the Chicago Gaelic Park Players, a renowned traveling theater group; and

 

WHEREAS, before the establishment of Chicago Gaelic Park, Chicago Gaelic Athletic Association games were played in parks scattered all over Chicago. Now, traditional Irish sporting events including hurling, Gaelic football, and camogie are hosted at Chicago Gaelic Park and attract visitors from all over the world; and

 

WHEREAS, Chicago Gaelic Park also celebrates traditional Irish holidays and activities, such as Harvest Day in September and Ireland on Parade in March; and

 

WHEREAS, the mission of Chicago Gaelic Park is to perpetuate and promote Irish culture through sports, music, dance and theater, while being a welcoming place for everyone; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby recognize the 40th anniversary of Chicago Gaelic Park; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
