RESOLUTION FOR BOARD MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 18, 2025

RESOLUTION sponsored by the Board of Commissioners recognizing September as National Preparedness Month

Body

 

WHEREAS, National Preparedness Month, observed each September, encourages all Americans to take proactive steps toward preparing for disasters and emergencies by focusing on key actions such as planning, building emergency kits, being aware of local hazards, and participating in drills; and

 

WHEREAS, the District’s mission includes protecting public health and safety, improving water quality, mitigating flooding, and managing water as a vital resource within Cook County; and

 

WHEREAS, the District’s Strategic Plan 2021-2025 emphasizes resilience, community engagement, and resource management -- core tenets that resonate deeply with preparedness efforts; and

 

WHEREAS, the District actively addresses emerging environmental health risks via its pretreatment program, helping safeguard the community’s water supply and building environmental resilience. The District enhances its resilience strategy through engineering and operational best practices aimed at protecting water infrastructure and quality; and

 

WHEREAS, the District participated in the Cook County Preparedness Fair on September 16, 2025, a collaborative event hosted by the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications; Cook County Emergency Management and Regional Security; and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, to strengthen preparedness across the region; and

 

WHEREAS, the District calls upon residents, businesses, and local governments across Cook County to join in preparedness activities, emphasizing collective action as key to safeguarding public health and the environment; and

 

WHEREAS, the District is in alignment with national preparedness goals by encouraging staff to “Make a Plan,” “Build a Kit,” stay alert via emergency notifications, and understand flood risk and other local hazards; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, on behalf of ourselves and our staff, do hereby recognize September as National Preparedness Month; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be spread upon the permanent Record of Proceedings of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
